Three people were killed and several others injured after a teenage driver allegedly sped through an Oakland street late Saturday night, causing a devastating crash, according to police.
Details of the Incident
Authorities reported that the incident occurred just after 11 p.m. local time. The underage driver, believed to be traveling at high speed, first struck a parked vehicle before careening into pedestrians while turning onto International Boulevard.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene as horrified onlookers witnessed the tragedy. Three additional pedestrians were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to stable.
The teenage driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested and also transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Eyewitness Accounts
Audio obtained by ABC San Francisco captured a first responder stating, "Right now, we're looking at four DOAs, two critical, waiting on 26... 26 is getting on scene... and waiting on... we got two ambulances coming."
One witness told the station, "He hit this blue car right here, and I guess he hit the gas and went even faster and went down the whole sidewalk and just sideswiped all those people. And he took off running... I saw him hit this car. I seen him coming, but there was nothing I could do. He was going too fast."
Another witness, Michael Turner, described hearing "tires screeching, then all of a sudden you heard a loud bang."
Cornelius Reed, speaking to KTVU, recounted the horror: "I ran over there, but I couldn't do nothing for nobody. I mean legs, legs bent opposite directions, arms going every which way. It was ugly. It was an ugly scene."
Investigation Ongoing
Police are investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the deadly crash. Further details are expected as the inquiry continues.
