Japanese Study Reveals Simple Bear Attack Survival Technique
Study Reveals Simple Bear Attack Survival Technique

A new Japanese study has revealed a simple yet effective way to survive a bear attack: adopt a defensive posture by lying face down and covering the head and neck. This technique can prevent serious injuries, according to researchers from Akita University.

Study Findings

The study surveyed 70 individuals injured in bear attacks in 2023. Among them, seven people who assumed this defensive stance escaped serious harm, while many others who did not suffered severe trauma. This research is the first of its kind to link specific defensive actions to injury outcomes.

The analysis, which examined personal accounts and medical records, found that 23 cases involved multiple trauma requiring general anaesthesia or amputations. The findings underscore the importance of knowing how to react during a bear encounter.

Rising Bear Encounters in Japan

Japan has experienced a record increase in bear encounters and attacks. In the last financial year ending March, there were over 50,000 sightings and 238 attacks, including 13 fatalities. Many incidents occurred in areas close to human habitation, such as farmlands and wooded residential zones.

This surge highlights the need for public awareness regarding bear habits and effective self-protection methods. The study provides a crucial recommendation for residents and visitors in bear-prone areas.

Practical Advice

If you encounter a bear in Japan, remember to lie face down, cover your head and neck with your hands, and remain still. Avoid running or making sudden movements, as this may provoke the bear. Staying calm and adopting this defensive posture could significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.
