A stable groom was taken to hospital after being kicked by a horse in a 'very distressing' incident at Redcar racecourse on Tuesday. The accident occurred before the fifth race, a 7f handicap, involving the three-year-old gelding Kameko Fever, trained by Richard and Peter Fahey.
The horse was being led around the parade ring by his personal groom when travelling head groom Chloe Briody approached from the right-hand side. As she took hold of Kameko Fever, the horse suddenly kicked out with its hind legs, striking Briody in the side and sending her flying across the grass.
Video of the incident was widely shared on social media, though some incorrectly stated it occurred at Leicester. A statement from Leicester racecourse clarified: 'We can confirm this did not take place at Leicester racecourse. Our thoughts are with the woman involved and we hope she is okay.'
Trainer Richard Fahey told Mirror Racing: 'It was one of my girls, Chloe, and she is fine. She went to hospital in an ambulance, they took an x-ray and everything is fine.' Redcar racecourse also provided an update, confirming that the staff member was attended to by medical staff at the scene and later at hospital, and is 'fine apart from some bruising'.
