A person has died after being hit by a train between York and Darlington, causing major disruption on the North East rail network. The incident occurred just before 8.25am on Wednesday morning, British Transport Police has confirmed.

British Transport Police officers and paramedics attended the scene, but the person involved was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The force has stated that the incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Northallerton railway station at 8.25am today (7 October) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
Rail disruption and travel advice
LNER first reported the disruption on social media at 8.37am, stating that trains were unable to travel between York and Darlington due to the incident. Services may be delayed, altered, or cancelled at short notice, with disruption expected until the end of the day.
At around 9am, LNER provided an updated estimate, indicating that disruption was expected to last until 12.00. Passengers were advised to continue checking their journeys before travelling.
Network Rail added that it was supporting emergency services responding to the incident at Northallerton, which was reported at 08.24. Trains running through the area are subject to cancellation, delay, or revision, and passengers are advised to check with their train operator or National Rail for the latest travel information.
