Edwin Morrison, 81, was sentenced to seven years in prison on [date] for the attempted robbery of 95-year-old Mary Morgan in her home in Little Hulton, Salford. The judge told Morrison he would 'very likely' die in prison due to his age and terminal renal cancer.
Manchester Crown Court heard that Morrison tricked his way into Mrs Morgan's home on January 27 by claiming he had information about bin collections. Once inside, he strangled her, bound her hands with cable ties, and demanded money. The robbery was foiled when Mrs Morgan's hairdresser arrived unexpectedly.
Morrison, who had no previous convictions, had set up a GoFundMe page claiming he needed money for funeral costs. However, the court heard that his funeral was already paid for. The judge rejected the defence's description of the act as 'altruistic', calling it 'utterly self-centred'.
Detective Inspector Paul Davies praised the victim's resilience, stating: 'It was a terrifying ordeal for the victim and Morrison’s actions of targeting a woman in her own home were shocking.'
