Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt were back in training on Tuesday, handing Michael Carrick a significant double boost ahead of Manchester United's Premier League opener against Hull City this Saturday lunchtime. Both players could be in contention for the match, though their extended absences mean they are not expected to start.
Sesko and De Ligt step up recovery
Sesko has been out since early May with a shin injury, while De Ligt has not played since November 2025 due to a back problem. Both were pictured on the grass at Carrington, with De Ligt having undergone surgery over the summer and seemingly stepping up his rehab. Carrick will likely manage both carefully, with De Ligt possibly returning in September or October 2026.
Matheus Cunha also took part in team training after receiving treatment for a knock in United's last friendly against AC Milan. However, there was no sign of Mason Mount, who has not featured since being forced off against Paris Saint-Germain on August 8.
Fitness updates on other United stars
Mount's continued absence is causing concern, though fears of a serious injury were eased when he was seen leaving the PSG clash without a limp or protective gear. He is unlikely to feature against Hull unless he trains later this week, with a possible return against Ipswich on August 30.
Tom Heaton is expected to miss a few weeks with a hamstring injury, potentially returning against Everton on September 6. Manuel Ugarte suffered a severe knee injury during Uruguay's World Cup clash with Spain and is unlikely to return until 2027. Karl Darlow, a new signing, is yet to play due to a previous problem, but it is not thought to be serious, with a possible return against Hull.
