A man in his 50s is fighting for his life in hospital after a punch bag machine was allegedly toppled onto him during an altercation in Toxteth. Emergency services were called to a row of shops on Berkley Street shortly before 7pm on Thursday, October 29, following reports of a disturbance.
Officers arriving at the scene found that a punch bag machine had reportedly been knocked over and had fallen onto the man. The victim sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
Incident Details Confirmed
An initial report had suggested the incident involved a stabbing, but Merseyside Police has since confirmed the precise details of what occurred. A white tent remains in place at the scene on the pedestrianised area off Upper Parliament Street, with the police cordon appearing to be focused outside Bon Café, where the shutter remains half closed. Two sheets of tarpaulin are also visible on the ground near the tent in the aftermath of the incident.

An investigation is currently underway, with witness and CCTV enquiries being carried out across the surrounding area. Detective Inspector Lee Egerton said: "Enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Berkley Street at around 7pm last night who saw anything or can assist our enquiries in any way to get in touch as a matter of urgency."
