Multiple people have been injured in a terrifying tram crash in Hanover, Germany, with emergency services declaring a 'MANV 10' mass casualty event, triggering a major rescue operation. The collision happened shortly before midday on Thursday in the Linden-Süd district of Hanover, sparking a huge emergency response involving firefighters, paramedics, and police.

The force of the smash left both trams derailed, with one carriage being thrown into an elevated platform and damaging the structure. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the incident was declared a mass casualty event, triggering a major rescue operation. Around 20 passengers were still onboard one of the trams after the crash, although officials said nobody was trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency Response and Injuries

Firefighters created temporary exits to help passengers escape before paramedics treated the injured at the scene. Twelve people suffered injuries in the collision, with seven passengers taken to hospitals in Hanover for further checks. The two tram drivers escaped unharmed. Photos from the scene showed derailed tram carriages strewn across the tracks as emergency workers flooded the area.

Details of the Collision

The two trams — one travelling towards Wettbergen on line 13 and the other heading to Altwarmbüchen on line 3 — crashed near the Allerweg stop on Ritter-Brüning-Straße for reasons that are still unclear. Ritter-Brüning-Straße was shut during the rescue operation while replacement buses were brought in for passengers.

Police have now launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Around 60 emergency personnel and 24 vehicles were deployed to the scene. Authorities continue to assess the situation, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
