Farringdon station was closed and evacuated on Thursday morning after passengers reported feeling ill due to an 'unknown substance', prompting a large emergency response including armed police. The London Ambulance Service treated 14 people at the scene, with two taken to hospital.
British Transport Police initially treated the incident as a suspected gas leak. Armed officers attended as a precaution, which the force described as 'typical during a significant incident' and not a cause for undue concern.
The London Fire Brigade conducted a sweep of the area and found no elevated readings of any chemicals, declaring the station safe at around 11:35am. The station reopened shortly before midday, and services resumed as normal.
Witness Kasia Lesforis, who works opposite the station, reported seeing armed police and people being treated outside. The incident caused minor delays on London Underground lines, with trains passing through the station while investigations were carried out.
