Police smashed the windows of a parked car at Fosse Park Shopping Centre in Leicester to rescue a dog that had been left inside for over an hour during a heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 30C.

Leicestershire Police received a report at 12:45pm on Tuesday, June 23, concerning the welfare of a dog in a car at the shopping centre on Grove Way, near Next and Flannels. Officers attended and removed the dog from the vehicle. Witnesses reported that the car windows were smashed to gain access, and the dog had been inside for more than an hour.

Owner Identified and Referred to RSPCA

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "At 12.45pm on Tuesday, June 23 a report was received concerning the welfare of a dog in a car at Fosse Park. Officers attended and removed the dog from the car. The dog's owner was also identified and the matter will be referred to the RSPCA." The incident occurred as Leicestershire neared a red warning for extreme heat, with temperatures soaring above 30C.
