An Australian couple has gone viral after revealing they received a threatening anonymous letter from a neighbor just 24 hours after moving into their new home in Brisbane. Ben and Jas, who relocated from the Sunshine Coast, shared the experience on TikTok, where they read out the letter accusing them of neglecting their dogs.
The Letter and Its Accusations
The anonymous author claimed the couple kept their dogs on the balcony for 'prolonged periods of time' and that surrounding neighbors were concerned about the noise. They threatened to report Ben and Jas to the RSPCA and Brisbane City Council if the issue was not resolved within seven days.
In the TikTok video, Jas explained the context: 'We've been in our house for a week and we already have beef with our neighbours.' She clarified that the dogs were only on the balcony because the house had no fence yet, and they were kept there for safety while electricians worked inside. 'The only time they were on the balcony was when there were electricians doing electricity work on our house so having the dogs inside wasn't safe. The prolonged period of time, by the way, was maybe an hour.'
Couple's Response and Public Reaction
Ben dared the 'Karen' to take the issue to the authorities, while Jas added, 'Give us at least a week of continuous behaviour before you put a letter in our mailbox.' The couple dismissed the claims as unreasonable, stating that the dogs only barked when tradespeople were present.
Social media users quickly sided with the couple. One commenter wrote, 'You shouldn't have to explain yourself. They're your dogs. Mine bark when they're outside. They're literally dogs.' Another said, 'The neighbours should have come over and introduced themselves and discussed any concerns.' A third agreed, 'Sending a letter to someone after just 24 hours of seeing what's going on is insane.'
The incident highlights the challenges of neighborly relations and the importance of communication before resorting to threats or complaints.
