A 23-year-old BMW driver died and seven other people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the A21 in Robertsbridge, East Sussex, following a police chase on Saturday night, 11 April.
The driver, from Hailsham, allegedly failed to stop for police after being signalled to pull over and subsequently collided with three vehicles. Emergency services attended the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two people are being treated for serious injuries. Sussex Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with procedure following any injury after a police pursuit.
Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme of Sussex Police said: 'This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of this young man and all those affected. An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances.' He appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact police quoting Operation Drummer.
An IOPC spokesperson confirmed an independent investigation into police actions prior to the collision, which occurred just after 8.15pm. The BMW was initially spotted in the Hastings area and made off when requested to stop. The IOPC sent investigators to gather evidence and declared an independent investigation.
