Blackpool Tower to Light Up Blue for Slain Toddler Preston Davey
Blackpool Tower Blue Tribute for Preston Davey

Blackpool Tower will be illuminated in blue on July 27 as a tribute to Preston Davey, a 13-month-old toddler who was sexually abused and murdered by his adoptive father, Jamie Varley. The request for the lighting came from Preston's birth mother, Sarah Davey.

Details of the Crime

Preston was killed by Jamie Varley, who was in the process of adopting him alongside his then-partner John McGowan-Fazakerley. The couple took Preston into their care as prospective adopters in March 2023. During a trial lasting over seven weeks at Preston Crown Court, jurors heard that Preston suffered extensive physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. A post-mortem examination revealed approximately 40 injuries on the toddler's body. Prosecutors described the case as one of the most shocking they had encountered, noting a sustained campaign of abuse during the final months of Preston's life.

Sentencing and Reactions

Varley was convicted of murder, sexual offences, causing grievous bodily harm, cruelty, and indecent image offences, receiving a whole life order. McGowan-Fazakerley was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child, cruelty, and sexual assault, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. England's Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza, branded Preston's death as "a failure of the state and the safeguarding system." She called for a safeguarding review to determine whether the murder could have been prevented. The Government has pledged to ensure that anyone responsible for negligence faces consequences.

Safeguarding Review

A local child safeguarding practice review (LCSPR) has been launched by Oldham Council following Preston's death. The review will examine whether there were missed opportunities to identify issues with his care. Such reviews are conducted after the death or serious injury of a child where abuse or neglect is suspected, and they assess the involvement of all agencies, including police, health, social care, and education.

Property Sale

Meanwhile, the home that Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley moved into just 22 days after Preston's death has been put on the market. The property is scheduled for an online auction closing on July 31. The listing describes it as an "immaculate detached property with stunning countryside views" and an "ideal opportunity for families." However, it warns prospective buyers that the vendor is currently serving a custodial sentence following conviction for offences involving a minor, though the offences were not committed at the property.

Community Tribute

A spokesperson for Blackpool Tourism confirmed to LancsLive: "I can confirm that the Tower will be lit in blue on Monday 27 July." The tribute aims to honor Preston's memory and raise awareness of the failures in the safeguarding system that allowed such a tragedy to occur.
