Armed police rushed to the Alum Rock area of Birmingham on Tuesday after reports of a stabbing near a primary school. West Midlands Police said they were called to Bridge Road at around midday following reports that a man had been seriously injured.
The incident is believed to have occurred directly outside Rosary Catholic Primary School, which was placed into lockdown as a precaution. A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing and remains in police custody.
Eyewitnesses reported that a man was stabbed in the street, and a good Samaritan attempted to stop the attacker by driving a van at him. The suspect then fled into a block of residential flats, where he barricaded himself inside. A woman was seen screaming from an upstairs window with bloodied hands.
Police confirmed that a man suffered serious injuries, while a woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. An air ambulance was deployed, and forensics teams are at the scene. Detective Superintendent James Munro said: 'We believe this to be a contained incident with a man in custody.'
Images from the scene show dozens of police cars and armed officers, with some officers performing CPR on a victim. The school and adjoining nursery were cordoned off, but children were not believed to be in the playground at the time of the attack.
