At least 27 people have been killed and 22 others are in critical condition following a devastating fire at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday. The blaze is the deadliest incident in the Thai capital in recent years, according to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who confirmed that 27 bodies had been recovered at the scene.
Horrifying Video Captures the Blaze
Horrifying video footage shows the moment flames blast from the door of the popular bar, located in the Chatuchak suburb in northern Bangkok. The clip captures people stumbling from the doorway as flames jet overhead from the inferno inside. A group of people can be seen standing at an outside bar before a sudden thick plume of smoke bursts from the entrance. Moments later, flames erupt through the door, and people attempt to escape in panic.
The footage shows the horrific scene lasting several minutes as patrons rush through the doors amid ferocious flames, many screaming. Thick black smoke eventually replaces the flames. A man with a fire extinguisher attempted to tackle the blaze before emergency services arrived.
Casualties and Injuries
In addition to the 27 confirmed deaths, 22 people are in critical condition in hospitals. At least 63 people were injured in total, said Suriyachai Rawiwan, the director of Bangkok’s disaster administration. Most of the victims are thought to be Thai nationals aged between 25 and 50.
Cause of the Fire
Initial reports from the disaster administration suggest the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in an air conditioner located in the ceiling. Many patrons fled to the back of the bar, taking shelter in bathrooms, where many of the dead were found, according to reports from the scene.
Aftermath and Investigation
Photos of the aftermath show charred tables and chairs and the damaged interior of the bar as emergency services inspect the scene. Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao is a popular live music venue. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and provide medical care to the injured.
