A passer-by climbed a bridge and smashed a car window to rescue a mother and her three-year-old daughter moments before the vehicle was washed away in floods in Hall Green, Birmingham.
Liam Stych spotted the trapped car while out walking with his partner Tia Draper. He used a rope from his own car to secure the vehicle to the bridge, then broke the back windows to free the child.
“I’m not a hero, I’m just a human being with good instincts,” Mr Stych said. The woman had driven through a ford on Green Road, near Sarehole Mill, when the car became submerged.
Ms Draper, who is five months pregnant, said the car was moving with the current and it was “scary”. Eyewitness Shamim Uddin described how Mr Stych tied the car to the bridge and saved both occupants.
The Environment Agency has issued dozens of flood warnings and alerts for the West Midlands following heavy rain.
