In an era dominated by smartphones and content creation, airlines enforce strict regulations regarding photography and videography onboard. British Airways has recently tightened its passenger terms, highlighting the need for holidaymakers to be aware of these rules.
British Airways' Updated Policy
Under section 11a of its 'behaviour on the aircraft' conditions, British Airways now explicitly prohibits filming or photographing crew members without their explicit consent. The airline stated: "If, while you are on board the aircraft, we reasonably believe that you have filmed, live-streamed or photographed our crew or other colleagues without their consent, we may take any measures we think reasonable to prevent you continuing your behaviour." Passengers who violate this rule may be asked to disembark upon landing, be refused passage on remaining flight segments, or face legal action. Additionally, if a diversion occurs due to such misconduct, the passenger is liable for the costs incurred.
Other Airlines' Stances
Virgin Atlantic permits photography but requires passengers to seek permission before including crew or other travellers in images. A spokesperson emphasised: "The comfort and well-being of our customers and crew is always our priority." Wizz Air similarly prohibits filming crew without consent, with a spokesperson stating: "Filming or taking pictures of cabin crew without their consent is not tolerated on board." easyJet allows personal photos and videos as long as they do not disturb others' privacy or include crew without consent. Ryanair's terms strictly forbid recording or photographing personnel without permission, though personal recordings may be permitted.
What Passengers Can Still Do
Despite these restrictions, travellers are free to capture personal moments such as their seat, the view from the window, cabin features, meals, and drinks. The key is to avoid directly filming crew members or fellow passengers without their consent. As long as passengers remain mindful of their surroundings, documenting the journey should not pose an issue.
For those planning to capture memories in the sky, understanding and respecting these guidelines ensures a smooth and enjoyable flight for everyone onboard.
