Three men have been jailed for running a human trafficking ring that operated across Scotland, England and Wales. George Filip, 45, Alexandru Moco, 26, and Leonard Banica, 41, received a combined sentence of 13 years and three months for their roles in trafficking and running brothels. A fourth person, Ionela Filip, 34, worked with the trio to run the illegal prostitution ring.
Victims and Investigation
The group targeted 16 vulnerable women, bringing them into the country to work as sex workers and moving them between locations in Scotland, Newport in Wales, and Birmingham to avoid detection. An investigation into their activities began in 2020 after reports of suspicious behaviour at properties in Newport, which were subsequently raided and led to arrests.
During the investigation, George Filip, Banica, and Moco fled the country, but they were tracked down and returned to the UK to face justice. The whole group pleaded guilty to multiple offences and were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday.
Sentences and Charges
Detective Superintendent Robin Fuller, of Gwent Police, said: "This was a complex investigation that involved meticulous enquiries, evidence gathering and partnership working in an effort to prosecute this group of people." He added that bank account examinations showed the group was making huge amounts of cash from the illegal business they had been running since 2015.
Filip was sentenced to eight years and two months after pleading guilty to charges including four counts of conspiracy to traffic and three counts of conspiracy to control prostitution for gain. Banica, of Romania, received three years and nine months for three counts of conspiracy to control prostitution for gain, conspiracy to traffic, and two counts of transferring criminal property.
Moco, of Birmingham, was given 15 months for conspiracy to control prostitution for gain, conspiracy to traffic, and being concerned in an arrangement facilitating the acquisition, retention, use or control of criminal property by another. Ionela Filip, of Smethwick, received a suspended sentence after admitting three counts of conspiracy to control prostitution for gain, two counts of transferring criminal property, and removing criminal property from England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Police Comment
Detective Superintendent Fuller added: "All initially denied being involved in any criminal activity but with the strength of evidence that we were able to present they pleaded guilty to various offences."
