A headless body has been discovered in the centre of Lisbon, Portugal's capital, prompting a murder investigation. The man's remains were found lying in the street on Patio Salema, a narrow alley near a major tourist site and picturesque square, at around 6.45am local time. Police have cordoned off the area and are yet to identify the victim.
The discovery comes just hours after the body of a woman in her 50s was found in the boot of a car nearby. Passers-by noticed a smell coming from the vehicle, leading to the grim find. However, following an initial murder probe, police have ruled out foul play in the woman's death, believing she may have suffered a heart attack while getting changed in the boot, which had no backseats. Her belongings were found in the car, suggesting she may have been living in it.
Lisbon is considered one of the safest cities in Europe with a relatively low crime rate. The headless body has not yet been identified, and police are appealing for information.
