An 87-year-old man arrested in connection with the murders of Harry and Megan Tooze in 1993 is no longer under investigation, South Wales Police has said. The man was arrested in December 2025 as part of a forensic review into the deaths of the elderly couple.
Following a review of the evidence, detectives have advised him that he is no longer under investigation and he has been released with no further action.
Forensic review continues
The forensic review, led by South Wales Police's Major Crime Investigation Team, is continuing. Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea said: “We remain committed to solving these dreadful murders which happened more than three decades ago.
“It is never too late to come forward - even with this passage of time I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to us because information they have may help us get justice for the family.”
The next of kin of Harry and Megan Tooze are being supported by police and are regularly updated on the progress of the inquiry.
Background to the case
Harry and Megan Tooze were found shot dead at their farmhouse, Ty ar y Waun, near Llanharry, south Wales, in July 1993. The couple had been shot in the head with a 12-bore shotgun and their bodies were discovered hidden in a cowshed beneath bales of hay.
The investigation initially focused on Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of the couple's daughter. Jones was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995, despite maintaining his innocence. His conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1996 and he was released after spending about a year in prison. The case has remained unsolved.
South Wales Police launched a forensic review in 2023, 30 years after the murders, to examine evidence from the original investigation using modern forensic techniques. The forensic review remains ongoing and police continue to appeal for anyone with information about the murders to come forward.
