About 1,000 people demonstrated for and against a show promoting the sale of property in Israel at a north-west London synagogue on Sunday, leading to 14 arrests by police.
Opponents of the event, held at Edgware United synagogue, claimed it also marketed property in land illegally occupied by Israel and was part of an expansionist plan to displace Palestinians. Organisers denied this.
Police kept rival protesters apart amid heightened tensions. Commander Adam Slonecki said officers used powers under the Public Order Act to prevent serious disruption, noting that Jewish communities face heightened fear after sustained protests and recent attacks.
Five people were arrested for violent disorder, one of whom also for assaulting a police officer. Seven were arrested for Public Order Act offences, four allegedly racially or religiously aggravated.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews said the protests were based on bogus grounds and amounted to intimidation, while pro-Palestinian groups denied this, calling it an attempt to silence protest over alleged Israeli human rights abuses.
