The Metropolitan Police have launched an urgent manhunt following a disturbing series of antisemitic attacks targeting seven Jewish premises in North London. The incidents, which include attempted arson and criminal damage, have sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a major police response.
Spate of Hate-Fuelled Incidents
Over a concentrated period, a lone suspect is believed to have targeted multiple locations within the Barnet area, a borough with a significant Jewish population. The attacks are being treated as linked by detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Central North Command Unit.
The most severe incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 17th September, when a suspect was caught on CCTV attempting to set fire to the door of a synagogue on Egerton Road. The footage shows an individual using a lit object to try and ignite the entrance before fleeing the scene.
Community on High Alert
In response to the terrifying spree, the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism, has issued a warning to local institutions. The CST is working closely with police and has advised all Jewish premises in the area to review their security protocols immediately.
A spokesperson for the CST stated: "These attacks are a reminder of the antisemitic hate that our community faces. We are providing support and advice to those affected and commend the police for their swift action."
Police Investigation and Appeal
Police have released CCTV images of a suspect they urgently wish to identify and speak with. The individual is described as a man wearing dark clothing, a beanie hat, and a face covering during the attacks.
Detective Sergeant Paul Binns appealed to the public, saying: "These were frightening attacks against a valued community. We are pursuing several lines of enquiry, but we need the public's help. If you recognise this individual or have any information, no matter how small, please contact us immediately."
Additional police patrols have been deployed in the Barnet area to provide reassurance to the concerned community. Anyone with information is urged to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
