Etihad Stadium in Melbourne has introduced gender-fluid bathrooms for its annual Pride Game, a move that has divided social media users. Five toilet blocks originally designated for disabled access or baby changing were reclassified as 'all-gender' or gender-neutral for the St Kilda and Sydney AFL clash.
Signs were posted throughout the venue encouraging individuals to use the restroom that best fits their gender identity and expression. The gender-diverse toilets were located on each level to ensure accessibility for all guests.
The decision sparked a storm of discussion online, with some expressing discomfort. One man said he would not feel comfortable sending his daughters to a bathroom where anyone could walk in. Another called the decision 'nauseatingly stupid', while a third raised concerns about drunk men entering female toilets.
However, others, including LGBTI activist Paul Kidd, commended the move. 'Footy isn't what it used to be, and that's a very good thing,' he said. Many fans expressed pride in the AFL's step toward greater inclusiveness during the Pride Game.
The teams also showed support: the Sydney Swans wore rainbow socks, and St Kilda had rainbow numbers on their jumpers. Both clubs have been commended for their strong stance on LGBTI inclusion. Host broadcaster Channel 7 also pledged support for the Pride Round.
