Vinted seller warns after £420 dress 'scam' over stain

A Vinted seller has issued an urgent warning to users after she lost a £420 dress in an alleged scam. Izzy said she learned the hard way that it is important to take videos and photos of an item while packing it up after being conned in several ways.

In a TikTok post, she told followers she had sold a “beautiful” Self-Portrait polka dot dress, which her sister had given to her. She explained it was “very, very small”, so she wanted it to go somewhere it could be properly appreciated.

Izzy disclosed the dress retails for £420, and she was simply trying to sell it for £55, because it had been gathering dust in her wardrobe for ages.

Buyer claims stain and return

Someone offered her £35, and she accepted as she had been attempting to shift it on Vinted for around three months. However, once the buyer received the dress, things turned sour. They alleged there were marks on the dress, which Izzy insisted were “not true in the slightest”.

She explained she went straight to her wardrobe and “packaged it up neatly” before sending it off to the buyer. The buyer then stated they wanted a return, insisting they wouldn't “lie about a stain”, claiming they were “extremely upset” about the whole affair.

Izzy said she would look into what could be done to resolve the matter, explaining if the dress was stained, it must have “happened in transit” as it had been brand new when sent. She then asked the buyer to show her the condition of the item upon arrival, and was shown “the biggest stain” across the entire middle section of the dress. The report had claimed the stain was “front and back”.

Vinted approves return after month-long wait

Izzy revealed it took Vinted a whole month to respond to her complaint, at which point they had approved the buyer's return – largely because Izzy had failed to photograph or film the item being packaged. And then, to make matters worse, the buyer went ahead and resold the Self Portrait dress for £95, which Izzy branded a “p*** take”.

In the comments section, followers were speculating whether the buyer may have used AI to fabricate the stain, despite her insisting they “took the dress to the dry cleaners”. One user wrote: “Vinted are siding with scammers, it's getting ridiculous.” Another advised to take a video every time for any item above a certain value to protect against a dispute.

Vinted responds to AI misuse concerns

A Vinted spokesperson said: “Using AI to mislead, whether in listings or during disputes (for example, involving falsified evidence), is not allowed, and we take appropriate action - including the removal of listings or the suspension of accounts - when we become aware of it.

“Each complaint is examined on a case-by-case basis using a combination of technical and human resources, and we recommend that members take photos of the item from all angles before shipping, to help with this. Overall, the misleading use of AI is in the minority, but we're constantly improving our systems to help ensure people have a safe experience on the platform.”
