Two men who fraudulently claimed a £4 million National Lottery scratchcard prize have been ordered to pay £100,000 compensation to a colleague. Jon Watson, 34, and Mark Goodram, 38, bought the winning card in 2019 using stolen debit card details.
The pair, from Bolton, travelled to London and purchased the scratchcard at a Waitrose store in Clapham. They attempted to claim the jackpot but were caught when they revealed they had no bank account, despite using a debit card for the purchase.
At Bolton Crown Court, both men admitted fraud and were sentenced to 18 months in prison. The court also ordered them to pay £100,000 in compensation to a colleague who had been involved in the initial claim process.
Recorder Sarah Johnston described their actions as having the 'audacity to plead your sense of injustice in the national newspapers' despite knowing the prize was fraudulently acquired.
