Daniel Kinahan, the alleged leader of the Kinahan organised crime group, spent his first full day in Portlaoise prison on Monday, a stark contrast to his previous luxury lifestyle in Dubai. He is confined to a cell for about 20 hours a day, with his only spending outlet being the prison tuck shop.
The facilities, described as a private gym and library, are modest at best. "The so-called gym and library are nothing much," one source told the Irish Times. "The gym is probably slightly bigger than a box room in a house."
Extradition and Charges
Kinahan, 49, was extradited from the UAE on Sunday and charged in Dublin with directing organised crime. He has not been convicted and remains innocent before the law. His extradition marks a victory for the Irish state and international law enforcement.
Kinahan is accused of leading a cartel said to control about a third of Europe's cocaine supply, along with firearms and racketeering. He had appeared untouchable from his Dubai base for nearly a decade, also becoming influential in boxing through MTK Global.
US Reward and Arrest
The US offered a reward of up to $5m for information leading to his arrest or conviction. The US treasury department said the Kinahan group engaged in a gang war in Ireland and Spain, "resulting in numerous murders". This helped Ireland secure an extradition treaty with the UAE, leading to Kinahan's arrest in Dubai in April.
After failing to block extradition, Kinahan was flown to Ireland on a government jet and taken to court, where he was told a bail application would go to the high court. He responded phlegmatically: "I think we know I won't be getting bail, but thank you."
Life in Portlaoise
Kinahan is the sole prisoner on a landing in A block, usually housing eight inmates. He will be alone during yard visits, which have wire netting to prevent contraband. Meals are served at 8am, 12.30pm, and 4.30pm, and he has a tuck shop account for personal items.
Video calls will allow contact with his family in Dubai, but in-person visits are behind a glass pane. Kinahan is scheduled to return to court on 5 October.
