iPhone owners are being urged to watch out for a new scam involving the upcoming iPhone Duo. Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes has discovered a fake pre-order page that looks remarkably real, but instead of delivering a discounted phone, it can infect devices with Dark Sword malware.
Fake pre-order page mimics Apple
With Apple set to launch its first foldable smartphone, the Duo, on October 23, cyber criminals are attempting to cash in on the excitement. Malwarebytes reports a wave of fake adverts promising the Duo, even though it is not yet on sale. The most concerning threat is a pre-order page that features full Apple branding and is hard to distinguish from a genuine web page.
The page offers a tempting deal, claiming to slash over £300 off the £2,000 asking price. Those who click on the pre-order page will not receive a cheaper iPhone Duo, but could instead have their current devices infected with Dark Sword malware.
Malware steals personal data
If the attack is successful, users could have personal data stolen, including messages, call history, contacts, voicemail, email, calendar entries, and cached location data. Malwarebytes explained: "The page uses the leaked DarkSword exploit chain to try to break into vulnerable iPhones."
"If it succeeds, a separate payload attempts to steal saved credentials, cryptocurrency wallet data, and notes. You don’t have to fill in the form, tap a download, or approve anything. Opening the page is enough to start the attempt."
How to stay safe
To avoid becoming a victim, users should update their device to the latest Apple software. The company patched this vulnerability earlier in the year, so having the latest iOS installed should keep users safe from future attacks.
It is also worth remembering that the iPhone Duo is not available to pre-order yet. Orders will open on October 16, with shipping and Apple Store availability starting October 23. The Duo features a passport-style design that opens like a book to reveal a display similar to an iPad mini, a dual-lens rear camera, long battery life, MagSafe charging, and Apple Pencil compatibility. Prices start from £2,000.
