Fortune Teller Scam: How a Long Island Psychic Swindled $700K from a Desperate Man
Fortune teller scam: $700K stolen with fake curse

A Long Island fortune teller has been exposed in a shocking scam that drained a desperate man of nearly $700,000. The psychic, operating under the guise of spiritual healing, convinced her victim that he was under a deadly curse that only she could remove—for a hefty price.

The Elaborate Deception

Hemanth Kumar Muneppa, the victim, sought guidance from the self-proclaimed clairvoyant in 2022. Exploiting his vulnerability, she claimed he was afflicted by a dark curse that threatened his life. Over months, she demanded escalating payments—totalling $680,000—for rituals, prayers, and even a fabricated 'magic box' to supposedly break the hex.

How the Scam Unravelled

Authorities revealed that the fortune teller used classic manipulation tactics: fear, urgency, and isolation. She warned Muneppa not to discuss the payments with anyone, claiming it would 'nullify' the rituals. When he grew suspicious after seeing no results, she vanished—prompting him to contact police.

Justice Served

The scammer now faces up to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to grand larceny. Prosecutors highlighted how these schemes often target emotionally vulnerable individuals. 'This wasn’t fortune-telling—it was predatory exploitation,' said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Experts warn that psychic fraud remains alarmingly common, with victims frequently too embarrassed to report losses. Authorities urge anyone experiencing similar coercion to come forward.
