A drug dealer who posed as a Deliveroo rider to conceal his criminal activities has been jailed after police caught him carrying cocaine and cannabis in Cardiff.
Nahro Gharib, 25, of Cyncoed, was stopped by officers from South Wales Police in Gold Street, Adamsdown, after they spotted him making an exchange, which appeared to have nothing to do with food deliveries.
Police chase and arrest
Footage from the incident shows Gharib dressed entirely in black, with the distinctive branded turquoise delivery bag strapped to his back. As officers approached, Gharib appeared visibly nervous and attempted to reassure them his electric bike was legal. He could be heard telling officers: "It's a legal bike, swear to God."
But moments later, as one of the officers moved to ensure his body-worn camera was recording, Gharib suddenly ran. He abandoned the delivery bag as he fled through the streets, prompting officers to give chase. The 25-year-old was eventually caught and detained after officers held up a Taser.
Drugs found in discarded bag
Police then returned to the discarded delivery bag and discovered a plastic yoghurt container containing multiple bags of cannabis. Class A drugs were also found inside the bag. Officers subsequently examined Gharib's e-bike and found it was capable of reaching speeds of 59.2mph, meaning it was not a legal electric bike for use on the road.
Gharib was detained under section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act. He later pleaded guilty to a series of offences including possessing cocaine with intent to supply, possessing cannabis with intent to supply, supplying cannabis, acquiring or possessing criminal property in the form of cash, and using a motor vehicle in a public place without third-party insurance.
Sentence
Gharib was sentenced to 20 months in prison and disqualified from driving for 17 months.
