Kira Cousins, 23, from Airdrie, Lanarkshire, has called her ex's family 'stupid' after she tricked them into thinking a toy doll was her newborn baby. She even named the doll Bonnie-Leigh Joyce and shared photos on social media, where hundreds congratulated her.
The Hoax Unravels
Cousins hosted a gender reveal party and a baby shower, parading a life-like doll. However, her mother found the doll in her room, and a friend posted the revelation online. Cousins fled the house and went into hiding after the story went viral last October.
Now breaking her silence to The Sunday Mail, Cousins admitted it was wrong to fake the birth but claimed her lies started after she suffered a miscarriage and was unable to tell her then-boyfriend. She said: “I couldn’t tell him. I did lose a child. I’d tried to tell him when I first lost the child.”
Blaming the Believers
Cousins said her then-boyfriend Jamie Gardner believed the doll was real, and he even took it to his parents' home alone. She stated: “Everyone in that house saw it and none of them twigged.” She added that those who believed her lies should have realised earlier, saying: “If they didn’t, they were stupid.”
Cousins said she eventually told Jamie the truth, and he “walked out” and called her “a psycho.” They spoke on the phone after the scandal erupted. She said: “When I first got back in contact with Jamie after this, one of the first things I asked him was if he really knew.”
Ex's Response
Jamie Gardner told The Sunday Mail he would have left if he suspected the baby was a doll. He said: “If I had ever known that was really a doll, I’d have run off sooner. I’ve not got a clue what really happened to be honest.” He added: “I want to get as far away from her as possible. I just want to move on with my life.”
Friends previously stated Cousins used AI to make footage of the doll look like it was moving. Cousins also said she tried to tell Jamie about the miscarriage but couldn't, and that their relationship was strained.
