A woman in Australia managed to escape her boyfriend after he allegedly chained her to a bed for days, according to court documents. Zane Woodward, 34, appeared in court on Thursday facing multiple domestic violence charges following the ordeal.
The victim, Broadie McGugan, 32, escaped on Tuesday afternoon while the couple was at an ATM in Oak Flats, New South Wales. Woodward was reportedly checking their bank balance when McGugan fled to a nearby pharmacy and asked a customer for help.
Police allege that Woodward used a heavy-set metal chain padlocked to her right ankle to keep her confined to the bed. The only times she was unlocked were to eat or use the toilet. The motive, according to court documents, was to stop her from 'sneaking out' at night to sleep with other men.
McGugan reported the offences at the local police station and was taken to Shellharbour Hospital, where she was treated for broken ribs, bruising, and a fractured eye socket. Woodward was arrested at his home on Wednesday afternoon.
He has been charged with kidnapping with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, two counts of actual bodily harm, domestic violence, taking and detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage, common assault, and intimidation.
