Police in Milwaukee have rescued six children, including a two-month-old infant, who were found locked inside a storage unit. The discovery was made at a StorSafe facility in the north of the city, leading to the arrest of a 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man on charges of child abuse and neglect.
The children, aged two, three, five, seven, and nine, were found unharmed, according to reports. Fire crews were called to breach the locked unit after police were unable to gain entry. No injuries occurred during the operation.
Local resident Tonya Lowe expressed shock, stating, 'It touched my heart. I could not believe it. We have failed these kids.' Another woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she had seen the children riding bikes in the area a week prior and was surprised they were not discovered sooner.
A man using the storage facility described the situation as confusing, adding, 'To me, this sounds like a cry for help, maybe they just needed help and didn't know how to get it.' The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is reviewing charges.
