Royal GP's husband in court over her murder

Mark Cain has appeared in court for the first time since being charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Hannah Cain, a GP who served in a pool of doctors on call for the royal family near the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

Dr Cain, 45, was found dead at her home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4. Mark Cain, also 45, of the same address, was arrested after the incident and later charged with her murder.

Court appearance at Norwich Magistrates' Court

Cain, who has a grey beard and bald head, appeared before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, October 7, wearing a black sweater. He spoke only to state his name, address and date of birth, and was not asked to enter a plea.

Prosecutor Jackie Hanlon told the court that the ambulance service contacted police at 2.25am on October 4. Dr Cain was “found in an upstairs bedroom not breathing, not conscious” and was attended to by paramedics.

Post-mortem findings and children at the scene

Ms Hanlon said a post-mortem examination “noted blunt force injury to the right side of her head had been inflicted, also an injury that could be suggestive of compression of the neck”. She added: “There were children present in the property at the time.”

District judge Matthew Bone told Cain: “I send your case to the King’s Lynn Crown Court where you will appear tomorrow (October 8) in the morning, and I remand you in custody.”

Background of Dr Hannah Cain

The Fern Hill address is just over a mile from Sandringham House, one of the royal residences of the King and Queen. Dr Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, was listed as a member of the practice team at Grimston Medical Centre and served in a pool of doctors regularly on call for members of the royal family nearby, as first reported by The Sun newspaper.

According to the website of Norfolk Sky Aesthetics, a business she ran, Dr Cain had been a qualified doctor for more than 15 years and a GP for eight. She described herself as a “caring and professional doctor” who continued her GP work alongside her cosmetics business.
