A 59-year-old Brazilian grandmother has been arrested on suspicion of poisoning her two grandchildren with a cake, resulting in the death of one child. Izabel Cardoso de Andrade allegedly baked the deadly treat while her grandchildren were visiting during the summer holidays.
The nine-year-old victim, Alana dos Santos Cardoso Marques, fell gravely ill almost immediately after consuming the cake on July 23, while her 11-year-old sister, who ate less, experienced milder symptoms. Both children began vomiting and complaining of severe stomach pain. The family cat also died after tasting the treat.
Alana was rushed to hospital by a neighbour after expelling a white liquid from her nose, but tragically died from cardiopulmonary arrest shortly after arrival. Police discovered the cat had also died showing similar symptoms. Forensic tests later revealed the presence of terbufos, a toxic pesticide, in both the cake and Alana's body. The chemical attacks the central nervous system, causing muscle weakness and, in high doses, death.
Cardoso de Andrade was arrested on Friday, September 19. Her lawyer, Raphael Simões de Moraes Neto, stated that his client voluntarily cooperated with investigators and allowed searches at her home. Police are investigating whether the poisoning was intentional or a terrible accident, and no motive has yet been established.
