A German court has delivered a guilty verdict in a case that reads like a plot from a dark thriller, after a grandmother was convicted of attempting to murder her three grandchildren with a poisoned chocolate cake.
A Sinister Delivery
The disturbing incident unfolded in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The 72-year-old woman, identified only as Magdalena K., sent a parcel containing the homemade cake to her daughter-in-law's home. The intended victims were her son's three children, aged just 10, 12, and 15 at the time.
Prosecutors detailed how the woman had laced the dessert with a lethal quantity of cyanide, a fast-acting and deadly poison. The plot was only foiled when the children's mother, suspicious of the unexpected gift, decided not to let them eat it.
A Motive Rooted in Spite
The trial at Hagen Regional Court uncovered a deeply fractured family. The prosecution argued that the grandmother's motive stemmed from a bitter dispute over access to the children. After being denied visitation rights, she allegedly concocted the murderous plan out of sheer spite.
"She no longer wanted to accept that she was not allowed to see the children," a court spokesperson stated, outlining the chilling rationale behind the crime.
A Narrow Escape and Legal Repercussions
Fortunately, the children's mother grew wary. Instead of serving the cake, she alerted the authorities. Forensic testing confirmed the presence of a fatal dose of cyanide, confirming her worst fears and preventing a tragedy.
The court found Magdalena K. guilty of three counts of attempted murder. While prosecutors sought a nine-year prison sentence, the judges handed down a seven-year term, recognising the severity of the premeditated act.
