Tobias and Finley Rice, aged eight and five, died following a multi-vehicle collision on the A30 near Connor Downs in Cornwall on Friday, May 28. The brothers, from Christchurch, Dorset, were travelling to St Ives during the half-term holiday when the crash occurred.
Tobias died at the scene, while Finley was taken to Bristol Children's Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 2. Their parents described the boys as 'full of life and energy' and said their family has been left with a 'hole in their hearts'.
In a statement released through police, the parents said: 'Both boys were full of life and energy and enjoying life to the full, through their love of school and scouting. Tobias had just moved up to cubs and Finley was about to move onto beavers. Their kindness and love and caring natures touched the hearts of everyone they met.'
A local man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He received treatment for minor injuries. Police are continuing to investigate the collision and have appealed for witnesses to call 101, quoting reference 50260136471.
Detective Inspector Andy Heath of Devon and Cornwall Police said: 'I thank those who have come forward to assist us following our appeals for witnesses. Specially trained officers continue to support the family.' The school community has also paid heartfelt tributes to the brothers.
