Coronation Street's Todd 'fast-approaching rock bottom' in harrowing abuse plot
Corrie star reveals toll of dark domestic abuse storyline

Coronation Street is set to air some of its darkest scenes yet as the coercive control and physical abuse storyline involving Todd Grimshaw and his partner Theo Silverton reaches a terrifying climax. Actor Gareth Pierce, who plays Todd, has opened up about the emotional toll of the plot and the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence.

A Descent Into Danger and a Special Episode

In upcoming episodes, viewers will see Todd's situation deteriorate rapidly. Gareth Pierce warned that his character is now in serious danger, with the abuse escalating to a near-daily occurrence. The physical violence is becoming normalised for Todd, who has been effectively isolated from his friends and family by the manipulative Theo.

The crisis will be showcased in a specially formatted episode, filmed entirely through various camera lenses. This unique perspective will reveal a shocking incident at their flat and show how the police become involved. Pierce hopes this innovative approach will powerfully convey Todd's trapped and surveilled existence.

Raising Awareness and Signposting Support

For Pierce, the storyline's core purpose is to educate and offer hope. He revealed that the show has already received messages from survivors and those recognising patterns from past relationships, proving the narrative's necessity. "It's important that people feel seen," he stated, emphasising the need to signpost charities that can offer a way out.

He specifically highlighted that while the methods of coercion are universal, support for LGBTQ+ survivors can be found through organisations like Stonewall and Galop. The actor explained that the plot challenges narrow perceptions of masculinity and shows that violence doesn't have to be met with more violence.

The Personal Toll and Viewer Support

Filming the intense plot has had a personal impact on Pierce. He confessed that the most difficult part has been the on-screen isolation, which has meant less time working with his close friends in the cast, including Tony Maudsley (George) and Tina O'Brien (Sarah).

However, he has been heartened by the protective reaction from the public. "I get a lot of people checking in on me, protectively, during my supermarket shop!" he shared. Pierce believes the audience's investment is due to Todd's recent redemption, making them root for him to rediscover a hint of his old cunning to escape the relationship.

As Todd fast-approaches rock bottom, the question remains whether this will be the catalyst he needs to break free. Coronation Street airs this harrowing chapter on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
