TV presenter Natalie Pike has revealed the full details of an eight-month stalking ordeal after the man responsible was sentenced. The BBC, TNT Sports and CBS broadcaster, known as a Manchester City host, released a statement via Instagram after the individual admitted to stalking involving serious alarm or distress.
The court handed down a suspended custodial sentence, along with additional requirements and a restraining order barring him from any direct or indirect contact with her.
Ordeal began at hairdressing salon
Pike explained to The Telegraph how her ordeal commenced when two men turned up at her hairdressing salon, located on the same street as her son's school, in a van and informed staff they were aware Pike was a client before insisting on knowing her home address. Her hairdresser immediately notified both Pike and the school her young son attends.
Pike subsequently examined previously hidden Instagram messages and uncovered a string of communications from a man spanning an 18-month period. She said: "They began in the usual way: 'Happy birthday', 'You're beautiful', that kind of thing. Then they started deteriorating."
Pike forwarded a screenshot of the profile to her hairdresser, who verified it belonged to the same individual she had encountered.
Frightening incident at Etihad Stadium
Eight days afterwards, in a frightening incident, Pike identified the same man just yards from her while presenting pitchside during Manchester City's 2-1 victory over Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium. "I just had a sense that something wasn't right," she said. "So I looked over my shoulder, and I instantly saw him – the man from the picture."
Pike notified police and subsequently viewed CCTV footage revealing the man making his way through the stadium in her direction. "I ran up to the public address announcer's room, and I had my first experience of a panic attack," she said. "I stood in a corner, burst out crying, and I just couldn't catch my breath."
Officers arrested the man the next morning, while Pike later obtained a stalking protection order prohibiting him from visiting her village, approaching her friends or relatives, or attending the Etihad. Manchester City additionally banned him from the ground.
Impact and sentencing
The ordeal had a significant impact on Pike, who had considered the Etihad a safe haven. She further disclosed that the stalking occurred during an incredibly challenging time for her family, with her cancer-stricken mother becoming gravely ill after Pike informed her about the situation. She explained that she had at first found it difficult to accept what was unfolding and had not intended to discuss the experience publicly.
"In my head, I was minimising this as a way of trying to protect myself," Pike said. "But we shouldn't minimise these things. You have to make sure that people know this behaviour isn't OK."
The man received his sentence at the end of September, with Pike opting to deliver her victim impact statement directly to him rather than via a screen. She revealed that the sentencing had at last given her the feeling that she was able to move on. "I did that as a means of taking back power in that situation," she said. "I thought, 'I don't need to hide. I've got nothing to hide about'."
In her Instagram statement, Pike said: "I hope this marks the end of one of the hardest periods of my life and allows me to finally close this chapter and move forward."
