A three-month-old baby girl who died while camping with her family in Staffordshire has been identified by police as Lacey May Oxford. She was found unresponsive in Great Wyrley on Saturday, 5 September, and pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived.
Police treat death as unexplained
Staffordshire Police described the circumstances surrounding Lacey's death as "unexplained". The force had previously referred to the incident as "isolated". Four people were arrested last month on suspicion of murder, and all four remain on conditional bail while investigations continue.
Those arrested include a 42-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman from south Staffordshire, a 20-year-old woman from Wolverhampton, and an 18-year-old man from Walsall.
Discovery at nature reserve
The discovery was reported to have been made in a "hidden away" area within the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve, where two tents were allegedly pitched close to a fishing lake, according to the Mirror.
Police previously urged the public to avoid sharing "unconfirmed and speculative" claims about the case on social media.
Official statement
In a statement, Staffordshire Police said: "We were called by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service, who were responding to a report of a child in cardiac arrest, at 8.45am on Saturday 5 September.
"Sadly, Lacey was later pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have been working hard to investigate the circumstances of Lacey's death, which is still being treated as unexplained.
"All four people who were previously arrested in connection with the investigation remain on conditional police bail at this time. Our enquiries are continuing and we will continue to provide updates on this investigation when we are able to do so."
