A tragic incident in Missouri has led to the death of an infant after her mother allegedly placed her in an oven instead of a crib for a nap. Mariah Thomas, 26, of Kansas City, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child following the incident on Friday.
Police responded to a report of an infant not breathing and found the child with apparent burns. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a probable cause statement, a witness told responders that the mother “put the child down for a nap and accidentally placed her in the oven instead of the crib.”
The statement did not provide further details on how the mistake occurred. Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jean Peters Baker expressed condolences, saying, “We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life. We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.”
Court records do not yet show whether Thomas has legal representation. No phone listing for her could be immediately located.
