Netflix's true crime series Worst Neighbor Ever features Jamal 'JT' Thomas, who was convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting his neighbor Miles Armstead in California. The four-part series recounts four separate tales of nightmarish neighbors, with Thomas appearing in episode three, titled Fear Thy Neighbor.
Background of the Dispute
Melina Armstead purchased a property alongside her husband Miles in the Californian neighbourhood of Eastmont Hills. Already raising four children from previous relationships, the couple were preparing to welcome their first child together and were eager to settle into a welcoming community. Miles struck up a friendship with Jamal Thomas, commonly known as JT, but when the Thomas family were forced out of their home, JT descended into chaos.
Escalation of Harassment
Visibly under the influence, JT began returning to his former residence and squatting in the garage, while simultaneously tormenting Miles and Melina without any apparent cause. The couple were compelled to contact police on numerous occasions as JT would hurl rocks and bricks through their windows, and even issued threats to return and 'kill' Miles. He would hammer and kick at their door during the early hours, inexplicably convinced Miles was his enemy, despite Miles having never done anything to warrant such hostility.
His relentless intimidation resulted in Miles remaining awake throughout the night clutching a baseball bat outside the front of the property, enabling his wife and children to rest securely. When JT appeared determined to inflict harm upon the couple, they took the difficult decision to relocate to an apartment and experienced immediate relief.
The Fatal Shooting
However, when Miles travelled back to his former neighbourhood on an errand, JT was lying in wait with a firearm and fatally shot him. In July 2024, Jamal Thomas was found guilty of first degree murder and in April 2025, he received a sentence of 28.8 years to life behind bars. As for his current whereabouts, he remains behind bars, having served just over a year of his prison sentence.
Melina Armstead's Reaction
Recalling the moment she discovered her husband had died, a tearful Melina said: 'I was sitting at my desk, working, and never in my life have I felt a feeling the way I had felt. It was like for a quick moment he was there, then I felt him, so close. And he felt, like, so far. And then I just started balling, crying. It was the weirdest experience. I just had this, like, panic. I called, and I kept calling. He wasn't a texter but he always picked up my phone calls, and he didn't pick up. So I literally waddle all the way back to the bedroom, putting clothes on, and I'm like, 'I have to go to the house, I have to find him, something's wrong'.' Upon arriving at their former home, she was met with the sight of a coroner's van, police tape and her husband's car parked outside.
