Two boys have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a knife attack in Newcastle city centre left two males with life-threatening injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene just after midnight on Monday, following reports of a disturbance involving a group of people in the street.
Victims Hospitalised with Blade Injuries
A man in his 20s and another male were taken to hospital with injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article, according to Northumbria Police. Both victims remain in hospital fighting for their lives.
The two arrested boys, aged 16 and 17, are currently in police custody. Police believe all those involved were known to one another and have stated there is no wider risk to the public.
Police Cordon and Increased Presence
A number of police cordons remain in place in Newcastle city centre as investigations continue. Monument Metro station was closed in the early hours but reopened just after 7am. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just after midnight today (Monday), we received a report of a disturbance in Newcastle. It was reported that a group of people had been involved in an altercation in the street in the city centre."
The spokesperson added: "Emergency services attended and two boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A man, aged in his 20s, and a further male were taken to hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article."
Investigation Ongoing
An investigation has been launched, and there is an increased police presence in the city centre to offer reassurance. Police are urging anyone with information to contact them online, quoting reference number NP-20260720-0012.
A spokesperson for Metro operator Nexus said: "Monument Metro station was closed in the early hours of this morning, Monday 20 July, at the request of Northumbria Police. This was due to an earlier incident in a city centre street of Newcastle. The Metro station was able to re-open to customers just after 7am."
