North Wales Police has launched an extensive search for the mother of a newborn baby whose body was discovered on the shoreline near Bangor. The force is working closely with partners at a “fast pace” to establish the circumstances of the discovery.
Discovery on the Menai Strait
Police were contacted by a member of the public reporting the discovery of the newborn baby’s body on the shore of the Menai Strait, which separates the isle of Anglesey from North Wales. Officers arrived at the Siliwen Road area shortly before 5pm on Sunday, September 27.
A Home Office pathologist, Dr Brian Rodgers, was due to carry out a post-mortem on the baby’s body on Wednesday afternoon, according to North Wales Live.
Appeal to the mother
Superintendent Llinos Davies said: “Our immediate concern continues to be for the health and wellbeing of the mother.
“My message to her is that you do not have to face this alone. Please get in touch and seek the support you may need. There are people ready to help you.”
Speaking to the wider public, Superintendent Davies continued: “I understand that this is a shocking incident for the community and I am grateful for the support and assistance that we have received so far.
“I continue to urge anybody with information regarding a woman or girl you think may have been pregnant or whose behaviour has been unusual or out of character over the past few months to please contact us.
“All names received will be treated with the utmost discretion and can be eliminated as the mother without delay.”
Ongoing investigation
A police presence will remain in the Bangor area in the coming days as part of the investigation, and cordons remain in place to allow officers to carry out their duties. A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been created on the North Wales Police website where anyone with information that could help enquiries can directly contact police.
Anyone with immediate concerns is advised to contact police on 101, quoting Operation Melex.
