A Birkenhead man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of his father. Andrew Roberts, 37, is accused of trying to kill his dad, David Roberts, by stabbing him in the chest during what police described as a domestic incident.
Incident details
The alleged attack took place on Meadow Road in Woodchurch, Wirral, at approximately 3pm on December 16, 2025. Merseyside Police were called to reports that a man in his 50s had suffered a chest injury. Emergency services attended the scene, and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
Court appearance
Andrew Roberts, of Woodward Road, Birkenhead, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on June 8, 2026. He was described as having short brown hair, a beard, and a tattoo beneath his right ear. A pool of potential jurors was asked to confirm they did not know the defendant before a jury of eight women and four men was selected.
Judge Simon Medland KC addressed the jurors, stating: "Andrew Roberts is accused of attempted murder, that on the 16th of December last year he attempted to murder David Roberts, who is his father. He's charged in the alternative also with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. That's what the case is about. David Roberts, I might add, was stabbed and he was stabbed in Woodchurch, which is where he lives."
Trial proceedings
The jury is scheduled to be officially sworn in on June 9, 2026, when Roberts' trial is due to begin. The 37-year-old faces two charges: attempted murder and the lesser alternative charge of wounding with intent. The prosecution will be led by Gerry Baxter, while Brendan Carville represents Roberts.
