A fire has swept through the Ibis Hotel in Malaga, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 guests. The blaze broke out at around 1:25am local time on Monday on Cerrojo Street, sending thick smoke visible for miles across the city.
Salvador Castillo, head of the fire prevention service at the Royal Fire Brigade of Malaga, reported that between 60 and 70 per cent of the hotel has been damaged. The first floor was particularly affected, with parts detaching from the floor slab due to the flames. No injuries have been reported.
The fire is believed to have started at Le Grand Cafe Centro, a restaurant adjacent to the hotel, before spreading to the first floor and then to other parts of the building. Fire crews worked throughout the day to contain the blaze, and by midday it was under control but not fully extinguished.
Malaga City Council deployed additional crews, bringing the total to six, while local police closed streets near Cerrojo Street to facilitate emergency services. The Andalusian Health Service confirmed that no one required medical treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
