A Liverpool man has been handed a significant prison sentence for a vicious and sustained attack on his former partner, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Paul Doyle, 41, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to attempted murder. The court heard how Doyle forced his way into the victim's home in the Old Swan area before launching the brutal assault.
A Terrifying Ordeal
The horrific incident unfolded on the evening of 7th February. Doyle, in a fit of rage, stabbed the woman multiple times in the neck, head, and body with a knife he had brought with him. The attack was so severe that the victim's injuries were initially considered life-threatening.
Emergency services rushed to the scene following distressed calls from neighbours who heard the commotion. The victim was promptly transported to a major trauma centre for emergency surgery.
Justice Served at Liverpool Crown Court
During the sentencing, the judge described the assault as a "determined and brutal attempt to kill". The court was told that the attack had a profound and lasting impact on the victim, both physically and psychologically.
Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy of Merseyside Police praised the victim's immense bravery throughout the investigation and court process. He stated, "This was a horrific attack on a defenceless woman in her own home, the one place where she should have felt safest. Doyle is a dangerous individual, and the streets of Merseyside are safer with him in prison."
A Warning Against Domestic Violence
This case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence. Authorities are urging anyone who feels they may be in a dangerous relationship to seek help. Support is available through charities such as Refuge and Women's Aid, as well as through local police services.
Doyle will serve his sentence in a high-security prison and will be subject to an extended licence period upon his release.
