Mummy star John Hannah walks out of Tom Cruise's Digger
John Hannah walks out of Tom Cruise's Digger: 'What were they thinking?'

John Hannah, known for his role in The Mummy, has revealed he walked out of Tom Cruise's new film Digger, saying he couldn't believe what the filmmakers were thinking. The 64-year-old actor shared his blunt reaction in an interview, delivering a tough blow to the already struggling black comedy.

A Star's Disappointment

When asked if he enjoyed Digger, Hannah responded with an immediate 'no'. He told Cinema Kai Nation: 'I don't think I've left a film before. I just can't believe what they were thinking. I don't know what they were thinking there.'

Pressed on his specific complaints, he added: 'I think it was just trying to be too many different things. You know, it was a play within a film. I mean, it was a film of a play within a film with kind of theatrical quarters. It was a mess.'

Box Office Struggles

The film, which centres on an oil tycoon caught in an environmental catastrophe, has struggled commercially. Despite a production budget of over $160 million (£120m), it has only earned $35 million (£26m) globally, according to Variety.

Digger also stars Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Emma D'Arcy and Jesse Plemons. It has divided audiences, with some praising its A-list cast and bold choices, while others feel it lacks the impact needed to justify the hype.

Mixed Celebrity Reactions

Not all celebrities have been critical. Anne Hathaway came to the film's defence, saying: 'I loved this brilliant movie. It's smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious. It's worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it.' She hailed it a '10/10' and gave it five stars.

Tom Cruise, 64, responded defiantly to speculation the film might underperform. On the On Film With Kevin McCarthy podcast, he said: 'When I am making [movies], I'm not going, 'Opening weekend!' I feel very much like we're going to make something that is a lasting piece of cinema.'
