Spanish police are investigating after an Irish husband and wife were found dead in a jacuzzi at the holiday home they were renting with their children in Cullera, near Valencia.
The couple's two young children reportedly alerted the homeowner after finding their bodies at the rented villa at the Cap Blanc coastal resort at around 5pm local time on Tuesday, the Irish Mirror reported.
Homicide squad leading probe
The homicide squad is leading the investigation after first officers at the scene found "possible evidence" that a crime had taken place. Local reports say the pair, aged 50 and 45, had injuries consistent with "puncture wounds," the Mirror also reported.
The possibility that they suffered an accident while in the hot tub has not yet been ruled out.
Family travel to Spain
Three relatives of the Irish woman are understood to have left Monaghan on Tuesday night and arrived in Valencia in the early hours of the morning. They are now looking after the couple's children.
The Irish woman who died is from Co Monaghan, and it is understood she had been living and working in England for more than a decade. Her husband is understood to be from Australasia.
Consular assistance confirmed
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Irish Mirror that it was aware of the incident and was providing consular assistance to one Irish citizen.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Valencia said: "The bodies of a man aged 50 and a woman aged 45 were found yesterday at a residential property in the municipality of Cullera. Both were Irish. Their children discovered the bodies in a hot tub and alerted the authorities.
"I'm not in a position to say exactly why, but the first officers who reached the scene found evidence pointing to the possibility the couple might not have died of natural causes, and therefore a specialist Civil Guard homicide unit in Valencia was mobilised to take charge of the ongoing investigation. Nothing has yet been ruled out."
