An inquest has begun following the death of 13-year-old Hayden Jones-Powell, who drowned after entering a lake in Leicestershire to cool off during a summer heatwave.
Incident Details
Hayden went into Meynell Lake on Fosse Way in Syston on Thursday, June 25, with friends. Leicestershire Police received an emergency call shortly after 1.30pm. Specialist police diving units, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, and East Midlands Ambulance Service responded. Three search teams deployed boats across the sailing club's lake, and extensive searches continued. The following day, June 26, Hayden was retrieved from the water.
Inquest Proceedings
On Wednesday, July 29, Senior Coroner Louise Pinder opened the inquest at Rutland and North Leicestershire Coroner's Court. The cause of death was recorded as drowning. The coroner is awaiting a police report. The inquest was adjourned, with a review hearing scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.
Community Response
The incident prompted an outpouring of grief in Syston. Hundreds gathered at Central Park the following Saturday to release balloons in Hayden's honour. His aunt, Charlotte Powell, speaking on behalf of the family, said: 'He was just a really lovely little cheeky boy, Not one child doesn't know Hayden. They all loved him. You've only got to look up the fence to see the tributes they've paid to see what an impact that boy had in 13 years. It's incredible.'
His football club, Riverside United JFC, described his death as 'heartbreaking' and noted he was a 'valued member of the Riverside family' after moving from the Sparrowhawks to the Merlins. The club stated: 'As a club, we stand together in supporting those closest to him and remembering a young life taken far too soon.'
