Former teacher faces retrial over 2011 rape allegation

Former teacher Daniel Gravell is to face a retrial over an allegation that he raped a woman in a hotel room.

Last week, Gravell was acquitted of one count of rape from 2001, but the jury was unable to reach verdicts on further allegations of rape from 2005 and 2011 and was discharged.

Prosecution seeks retrial

On Monday, Swansea Crown Court heard the prosecution was seeking a retrial in so far as the 2011 allegation was concerned, but was asking for more time to consider its position about the 2005 allegation.

Judge Paul Thomas KC granted the prosecution another seven days to review the case. The judge said it was unlikely that the retrial - be it with one complainant or two - would be able to be heard within the next six months.

Defence maintained consent

At trial, 45-year-old Gravell, of Porth-y-Plas, Johnstown, Carmarthen, maintained that the 2001 incident "simply never happened" while the 2005 and 2011 incidents were consensual.
