Brand trial hears prosecutor's 'vagina and heartbeat' remark

The prosecution in Russell Brand's rape and sexual assault trial told Southwark Crown Court that the comedian didn't care who the women were "so long as they had a vagina and a heartbeat".

Ms Karmy-Jones KC, prosecuting, made the remark during closing arguments, saying "sex was more than just a hobby" for Brand. Referring to evidence from his former personal assistant, Helen Berger, who said Brand was "always in his underwear", the prosecutor added: "We suggest this demonstrates a disregard for professional boundaries."

Prosecution's Closing Argument

Ms Karmy-Jones referred to Berger's evidence relating to Brand's "insane sexual appetite". She added: "It didn't matter who the women were, their personalities, interests… so long as they had a vagina and a heartbeat, he could get what he wanted."

The court previously heard that Brand described himself as having a "fervid, febrile mass of sexual energy" towards the end of sex in his 2007 book, My Booky Wook. Ms Karmy-Jones told jurors: "That febrile mass of sexual energy, we say, was released on the women you have heard from."

Trial Status

The defence and prosecution have been giving their finishing arguments at Southwark Crown Court, with the jury already instructed by the judge on deliberations. Brand denies all allegations against him.
